Watershed meeting on environmental sustainability

Sustainability initiatives and opportunities within the dairy industry were discussed at a watershed meeting where a broad cross-section of the dairy industry, including industry bodies, processors and retailers, met for the first time with representatives from environmental and conservation organisations. MPO CEO Dr Chris van Dijk opened the meeting and stressed that “nobody can operate in isolation”, hence the need to come together as a collective to collaborate.

Important matters discussed included the need to promote an awareness and understanding of existing legislation and the latest changes in legislation, the potential for expanding existing codes of practice to address a number of sustainability issues and how to make  information on sustainable dairy production from various international and local sources available.

The MPO is undertaking various actions in this regard with the support and cooperation of the Department of Water and Sanitation and the WWF. For more information contact Barbara Bieldt at 012 843 5600 or send an email to barbara@mpo.co.za.
