Representatives from the Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation met with MPO Eastern Cape chairman Lourens Gildenhuys, vice-chairman Zola Gebeda, management member Bradley Schwarz and Philip Swart, manager of member services at the MPO, to discuss steps to inform dairy farmers about the requirements of the National Water Act, Act 36 of 1998. According to the department, most farmers have registered their water abstraction, storage and irrigation facilities but few effluent dams for the storage and discharge of waste are registered. The department is eager to explain the requirements of the act through interactive workshops to help farmers comply. The MPO is in favour of the proposed workshops and will consult with the department to facilitate the arrangements.
