Dehorning is an essential practice on any dairy farm for the safety of animals and people. However, it is possible to do dehorning more effectively, without causing pain. Administering pain medication prior to dehorning is becoming more widely recommended and it should be done as early as possible. The horn bud attaches to the bone between the first and second month of a calf’s life. For that reason, the earlier disbudding or dehorning is done, the less invasive and less painful it may be.
