Successful MPO Western Cape Farmers’Days

Successful and well-attended MPO Western Cape Farmers’ Days were held in George, Swellendam and Malmesbury, respectively from Tuesday to Thursday last week. Dairy farmers who attended the events received valuable advice on how to calculate key performance indicators (KPIs) and using the information when making important management decisions. Chris Fourie and Justin Moolman from Dairy Management Consulting said the five most important KPIs for a dairy farmer are:

 Reproduction rate

 Milk production 21 days in milk

 Stillbirth rate

 Percentage of cows culled before 50 days in milk

 Calve mortality rate

Dr Koos Coetzee, MPO economist, gave an overview of the local and international economic outlook for dairy farmers, Bertus van Heerden, head of Agri Inspec, shared information on the management of substandard and illegal dairy imports and Philip Swart shed light on the MPO’s strategy for 2016. Dairy farmers were alerted to the importance of preventing brucellosis through appropriate vaccination. Chairman of MPO Western Cape Philip Blanckenberg thanks all dairy farmers who attended the events, speakers and sponsors for their contribution.

Lise Roberts interviewed Chris Fourie about KPIs and specifically the presentation in this regard at the Farmers’ Days on RSG Landbou. To listen to this interesting interview, click HERE.
