Steady growth in retail market

The market for dairy products continues to grow. In the 12 months to March 2015 retail sales of dairy products has increased. This increase in sales coincided with an increase in retail prices. Figures supplied by Nielsen and collated by Sampro indicate that retail sales and prices of dairy products have increased. These increases are indicated in the table below. According to MPO economist Dr Koos Coetzee the increase in sales at higher prices show the important effect of changes in income patterns in driving dairy demand.

Product % Change in retail sales % Change in retail prices
Fresh milk 2,9 9,2
UHT milk 3,8 18,5
Flavoured milk 0,2 4,2
Yogurt 2,8 5,1
Pre-packaged cheese 20,0 7,0
Butter 2,2 13,3
