Plea to declare drought a national disaster

Annette Steyn MP, the DA’s shadow minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, reiterated her plea in Parliament during the Minister of Forestry and Fisheries’ budget debate that the current disastrous drought be declared a national disaster. As a result of the drought South Africa has to import roughly 3,8 million tonnes of maize at an estimated cost of between R13 billion and R14 billion, according to Grain SA.
