MEDIA RELEASE:                                                              10 March 2021

The National Emergent Red Meat Producers Organisation (NERPO) has hailed the swift response of the Eastern Cape government, after the major arrests of 42 people, as well as the recovery of about 300 stolen animals.

NERPO’s comment came after the Eastern Cape government, through its multi-disciplinary cross-border operation, recovered 121 cattle, 111 goats, and 57 sheep, as well as 8 horses.

Mr Aggrey Mahanjana, the group managing director of NERPO expressed a great relief, adding that, “I am glad that they have not only apprehended the stock thieves, but they have managed to recover the lost animals. In as much as we are happy about the arrest, we hope the criminal investigation unit will do its proper work to ensure that the criminals are not released on bail.”

“The Premier of the Eastern Cape, Mr Oscar Mabuyane has demonstrated leadership. His promise to the farmers during the meeting he had with NERPO late last year, that they will not leave any stone unturned, is beginning to bear fruits. He is walking the talk.”

Mahanjana said NERPO would continue to participate in all the relevant bodies that seek to find a lasting solution on combating stock theft, especially, through the Provincial Stock Theft Forum.

“Stock theft has crippled the livestock farmers and indeed the economy of the province and we hope this will restore dignity and credibility of our government. Eastern Cape cannot afford to be the stock theft capital of South Africa anymore. ”
