MPO FLASH 2/8 APRIL 2020
On 7 April 2020, the MPO motivated the opening of fast food businesses through the Commodity Chamber of Agri SA. The point of departure was the relaxation of the spaza shops and informal food traders COVID-19 regulations and the similarity of these stores with fast food businesses. The business protocol for these businesses can be fairly easily defined to still counter the spread of the COVID-19 virus in tandem with the broad social rules of conduct already in place. In addition, the South African public has become accustomed to social behaviour rules over the preceding period of restriction and it can be applied in the fast food businesses. It has also been pointed out that these types of businesses do not sell alcohol and can only be limited to take-away meals. Agri SA will forward the proposal and motivation on an urgent basis to the Minister of Agriculture.
