MPO investigates action against imports

Following the increase in dairy imports, in particular, UHT milk over the past five months, the MPO is investigating options available to limit imports. The department of agriculture’s Directorate: International Trade as well as the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) were informed of the current market situation and they have offered to assist the MPO to limit dairy imports, in particular, UHT milk. They have explored the activation of a special safeguard (SSG) against the importation of UHT milk and an increase in the import tariff on UHT milk. The MPO’s manager of market protection and development, Barbara Bieldt, said the MPO is doing everything in its power to improve current market conditions and will pursue all avenues.
