Milk pricing in big supermarkets questioned

Media reports this week highlighted the fact that retail prices for dairy products have been increasing while producer prices have over the past two years remained on virtually the same level, despite rising input costs. The reports followed a press statement by Dr Chris van Dijk, MPO CEO, in which he appealed to milk processors to increase producer prices in order to maintain local milk production. The independent consumer price comparison website Retail Price Watch examined its database to determine what had been happening to milk prices around the country since January last year and raised the question as to who is taking the profit in the dairy value chain?
