Total milk intake continues the decreasing trend started in December 2015. Information provided by Milk SA shows that the total milk intake by processors and others in January 2016 was 4,9% lower than in January 2015. The very high temperatures in January, lack of quality roughages and higher grain prices were major factors that impacted on the total milk production. As roughage become scarcer still and grain prices increase, the pressure on milk producers will increase. This will result in a further decrease in milk production. The MPO estimates that total production in 2016 will be 3% below the 2015 level.
