The South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) recently submitted its 2015/2016 annual report to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The SAVC stated that South Africa currently has only 3 180 registered veterinarians, which is not enough to service the country. There is a significant shortage regarding expertise relating to animal production. Dr Clive Marwick, an executive member of the SAVC, said that although the number of registered veterinarians and specialist veterinarians had increased during the financial year the number of animal health technicians had decreased.
