Imports remain high

Dairy imports remain at high levels. During September 2014, 4 300 tonnes of dairy products were imported, compared to the 3 075 tonnes imported in September 2013. Total imports during the first nine months of this year is at 36 299 tonnes, 23% more than the 29 479 tonnes imported during the same period last year. Slow production growth and a growing demand are the main reasons for higher imports.

Exports did decrease slightly in September 2014, compared to September 2013. This was probably caused by the tighter supply/demand situation in South Africa and not because of lower export demand. In the first nine months of this year, South Africa has exported 141 224 tonnes of dairy products to neighbouring countries and other destinations, marginally more than the previous year.
