The MPO’s regional chairmen gave an overview on the effect of the drought on milk producers in each of their regions during a meeting held on Wednesday 13 January. In general, the drought has had a major impact on the availability, quality and price of feed. In some areas, this has led to dairy farmers even having to sell lactating cows. It is expected that feed shortages will be experienced for the next year. According to the regional chairmen, milk production is decreasing, the national herd is at risk and price increases by processors are required urgently.
