Agri Inspec investigates cheese imports

The MPO has commissioned Agri Inspec to investigate complaints that large volumes of cheese were imported through Cape Town Harbour at low prices against which the local industry cannot compete. Allegations that the imported cheese was repackaged and sold in the retail labelled as locally produced cheese were included in the investigation. Bertus van Heerden, MD of Agri inspec, reported that a thorough investigation was conducted in Cape Town and the surrounding areas but no evidence could be found to support the complaints. The situation is being monitored closely and the relevant authorities have been alerted.
