Die MPO hou sy vinger op die pols van die suiwelbedryf, en spesifiek op die hartklop van die primêre deel van die bedryf in die waardeketting. Die volgende feite is welbekend:

  • graanpryse is hoog en toon geen teken dat dit gaan daal nie;
  • droogtetoestande heers steeds in sekere dele van Suid-Afrika;
  • die koste van intermediêre insette soos elektrisiteit styg voortdurend; en
  • melkprodusente moes kapasiteit ontwikkel (kapitale uitgawes) om wisselvallige elektrisiteitsvoorsiening die hoof te bied.

In die lig van hierdie faktore, asook ander wat al voorheen uitgewys is en wat ʼn dodelike kosteknyptang-greep uitoefen op die ekonomie van onverwerkte melkproduksie, is die lae vlak van die produsenteprys in September 2020 wat deur ʼn belangrike melkkoper betaal word, onrusbarend. Die produsenteprys van onverwerkte melk in September het gewissel tussen R4,45 en R6,08 per liter, of anders gestel ‘n verskil van meer as 36%.
