MEDIA RELEASE:                                                              16 October 2020

The National Emergent Red Meat Producers Organisation (NERPO) welcomes the Presidential Economic Recovery Plan especially at the time when livestock farmers were hit hard by the effect of COVID-19, which had a devastating economic effect.

NERPO believes that President Ramaphosa has put a spotlight on growing the economy with the focus on agricultural sector and forestry, as some of the main pillars to drive economic recovery.

Mr Aggrey Mahanjana, the group managing director of NERPO, said he was particularly happy that the plan would prioritise woman in the farm-ownership process, giving insight to how the government plans to create space for women in the agricultural sector.

However, he further warned that the absence of solid capacity in terms of implementation would have an absolute dire consequence for the government’s good intentions and this compromises the entire recovery plan.

“Inefficiencies in terms of implementation and poor coordination remain a massive challenge and, if not addressed, it poses a serious challenge to achieving the outcomes outlined in the recovery plan as announced by the President.”
