Fonterra New Zealand has opened a mega dairy milking 15 000 cows in China earlier this year. The dairy hub produces 150 million litres of milk per year and is part of Fonterra’s aim to produce one billion litres per year in China by 2020. According to Mr Henk Bles, managing director of international farming at Fonterra the hub cluster, which consists of five farms milking between 3 000 and 3 500 cows imported from Australia and New Zealand, this is only the beginning. A second hub is already under construction in another area of China. None of the milk is processed by Fonterra but is sold to local manufacturers at a premium price since food safety is assured.
