Producers in eight EU countries face milk quota fines

The European Commission announced on 3 October 2014 that eight EU member states face superlevy penalties of just under €409 million R4,5 billion after exceeding their milk quotas for deliveries in 2013/14. Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Denmark, Austria, Ireland, Cyprus and Luxembourg had all exceeded their quota limits although overall EU deliveries were 4,6% below the total quota volumes. Of the 20 member states that have not exceeded their limits, 14 were under quota by 10% or more. The countries that exceeded their allowances did so despite increasing quotas by 1% in 2013/14. The 1% increase was implemented to help producers prepare for the end of quotas in May 2015. To read more, click HERE.
