Milk production recovers slowly

Milk production during September 2014 is estimated at 275 million litres, up 5,5% on September 2013. This has resulted in an 0,9% increase in total production for the first nine months of 2014. Lower grain prices and constant producer prices did result in an increase in the milk:feed price ratio to above 1,5:1. Demand growth continues. During the 12-month period to June 2014, Nielsen reported an increase in liquid milk (+1,2%), yogurt (+1,3%), prepacked cheese (28,4%) and butter (4,2%) demand in the formal market. The 0,9% increase in production is not enough to fulfil demand growth.
