Farmers require guidance on land reform

Agri SA issued a media release on 16 March 2015 in which it is stated that land owners increasingly require practical guidance on principles, approaches and agreed methodologies whereby land reform can be accelerated. The organisation’s framework for land reform, adopted in October 2014 by Agri SA’s congress, was subsequently further interrogated and developed in conjunction with an interdepartmental task team that reports to Minister Nkwinti.

The framework acknowledges, among others, the importance of partnerships, contributions by relevant stakeholders, protecting collateral values, sustaining production and the welfare of farming communities.

Regardless of policy uncertainty, many farmers have proceeded with land-reform initiatives because they believe it’s the right thing to do.

Agri SA president Mr Johannes Möller stated that policy certainty, the content thereof and the nature of enabling measures are, however, still issues to be resolved in Agri SA’s discussions with government. He expressed his appreciation for opportunities to deliberate appropriate land reform solutions with government and is looking forward to participate in processes that will enhance consensus on this important issue.
