The South African market for dairy products is growing. Figures compiled by Nielsen and supplied by Sampro indicate a positive trend in total sales and retail prices during 2014. Changes in demand and retail prices for a selection of dairy products are shown in Table 1. According to MPO economist Dr Koos Coetzee, demand growth at higher prices clearly indicates that dairy products are less price sensitive than previously expected and that income is probably a larger driver of retail demand than prices.
