The Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO) is seriously concerned about the incidence of contagious abortion (CA) in non-dairy cattle and the danger this holds for dairy herds. While milk producers ensure that their own herds are vaccinated and kept separate from other cattle, it is impossible to limit the transfer of bacteria from infected animals to clean animals completely. Dogs, wild animals and even flies can carry CA bacteria from infected placentas to healthy animals. CA is a controlled disease in terms of the Animal Disease Act and the responsibility of control lies with government. The MPO urges milk producers to ensure that their herds are properly vaccinated in accordance with their veterinarians.
