Total milk production during 2014 is estimated at 2 881 million litres, up 2,2% on 2013, similar to the 2012 – 2013 growth rate. The increase in production took place in the second half of 2014, as more favourable grain prices enabled farmers to increase concentrate feeding. Favourable production conditions in the pasture areas further contributed to the production growth.
The local and export markets were able to absorb higher production and higher imports during 2014. Milk production peaked in October 2014 and has decreased to normal levels in December 2014. Assuming normal production conditions will continue and producer prices will not be reduced, production during 2015 will probably continue to grow to meet market demand.
