17 years of production

Not many farmers can say that their cow has delivered 25 kg of milk each day for more than 17 years. Kerstin Persson, the owner of the Arbelunda Sörgård farm in Sweden, has a cow, called Vega, who delivered 156 tonnes of milk over her lifespan. She diligently delivers her quota of milk each day for 17 years. It is a figure in the region of 500% more than the average lifetime yield of a dairy cow in even the most productive countries.

On his farm, Vega is no exception. Docka, another cow on his farm, is well on her way to perform just as well as Vega. She has already delivered some 70 tonnes of milk, has calved six times and shows no signs of stopping. “There is no secret to what we have done,” says Persson. “I think we just understood very early the importance of animal health and welfare. They need to have a nice life and when they do, we do too,” she says. This farm is extremely committed to creating a happy and healthy environment for their calves, which eventually become their high-production cows.
