Lower production in exporting countries

The sharp decline in dairy product and producer prices in exporting countries has resulted in a decrease in milk production in major exporting countries. Figures recently released by CNIEL in France indicate that milk production in the first four months of 2015 is lower than in the same period last year in Argentina (-3%), Uruguay (-0,2%), Chile (-7,6%), the European Union (-0,7%) and New Zealand (-0,1%). Production is higher in Brazil (+5,3%), the USA (+1,8%) and Australia (+3,4%). According to MPO economist Dr Koos Coetzee, these figures indicate that the lower producer prices have already affected milk production. The production in the EU has also decreased despite the lifting of quotas from 1 April 2015.
