Limit greenhouse gas emissions

The dairy industry is committed to encouraging sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices. A major contribution to this commitment is the limiting of limit greenhouse gas emissions. The industry therefore endeavours to embark on a programme of mitigation, aiming to inform and train farmers. Whereas this initiative is still in the planning phase, a few directives and guidelines may be of value. Greenhouse gas emissions (and consequently the carbon footprint) can be reduced on-farm by:

• Improved production efficiency

• Herd composition

• Limiting cultivation of crop lands by introducing minimum or no tillage methods

• Saving electricity

• Optimising transport

• Providing higher quality feeds

• Using home-grown feeds and by-products from the human food chain

• Including feed additives such as oils and fats and ionophores such as monensin in feeds.
