The Competition Commission has published a notice in the Government Gazette on 30 October 2015 that it will conduct a market inquiry to understand the general state of competition in the grocery retail sector. The purpose of the inquiry is to examine whether there are features or a combination of features in the sector that prevent, distort or restrict competition and/or to achieve the purposes of the Competition Act, No. 89 of 1998. A market inquiry is a general investigation into the state, nature and form of competition in a market, rather than a narrow investigation of specific conduct by any particular firm.
